Collated Fasteners

Coil Nails

A Nail Gun, Nailgun, Coil Nailer or Strip Nailer is a type of tool used to drive nails into wood or other kind of material. Usually driven by compressed air (pneumatic) or highly flammable gases such as butane or propane, Nail guns have in many ways replaced hammers as tools of choice amongst most of it’s users.

Nail guns do not use individual nails as such, instead, the nails are collated into strips or, in wire or plastic carriers making them into coils, depending on the design of the Nailgun. Some strip nailers use a clipped head or “D” head so the nail can be placed closer together, which makes for less frequent reloading. Nail guns vary in the length and gauge (thickness) of nails they can drive. With Coil Nailers some, will fire from 19mm at the very smallest whilst the largest strip nailers can go up to 200mm, the application does determines the fastener range and, also states the type of tool used to apply the nail.  Smaller variants are often called 18g Brad nailers or Bradders or, 16 Gauge Brad Nailers which use 18 gauge or 16 gauge fasteners that drive nails with little no head. Pinners use the finer 23 gauge headless pin, typically referred to as veneer pinners. Finish nailers drive smaller gauge angled nails typically 15 gauge, over a wide range of lengths ranging from 25mm to 65mm, with very small heads. Strip nailer’s drive 38mm to 64mm nails for metal connectors used to increase structural strength on wood framed buildings. Framing nailers typically drive 2.5 to 3.1gauge nails. Roofing nailers, almost always collated into coils, drive large headed nails commonly known as clout nails that, minimise  the risk of the nail tearing through the material being secured. Nail guns also have many advantages over hammers as they quickly and repeatedly drive the fastener consistently set the nail head at, or below, the surface. Therefore a great production innovation.
